CREATE CLUB

2022 - 2023

This school year we opened our school's first art club: Create Club. I was approached by two of my freshmen from the previous year, who really felt our school could benefit from having art projects available to our school community.

We believed the club would open opportunities for students who were not in an art class, did not have access to art supplies at home, or for current students to learn arts & crafts projects not related to state standards.

"Ms. E had only recently arrived to Vista Del Lago. She was already extremely connected with students by the end of the year, including myself. Vista's art club wouldn't be possible if not for her encouragement to start one. As the club president, she has always been supportive in her role as an advisor."

EVENING OF THE ARTS: November 2022

The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Vista Del Lago High School collaborates twice a year: in the Spring the Love Show's focus is on performing arts, while in the fall the Evening of the Arts focuses on visual arts. Both events showcase student work in dance, choir, band, studio art, and graphic design.

"Not only does Esparza promote student work inside her class in its early or finished stages at the beginning of the year, she also promotes parent participation in celebrating the successes so far made by the students in a manner that is admirable and inspiring."

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING

"Ms. E is my one-in-a-million teacher. She has encouraged me to do my best in the classroom and at home. She made our classroom a place we can call home, where we know we are loved and supported."

                                               -Isis G. , Art I Student

My practice focuses on putting all my student's well-being in line with the content.  I establish social-emotional learning by meeting basic needs and occasionally using choice-based art therapy lessons that relate to the content on Wellness Wednesdays.

This practice includes having items like snacks, water, band-aids, pencils, line paper, pads, hairspray, and body spray all accessible from a community closet. I also have things like cellphone/laptop chargers, cough drops, and hair ties at my desk for those that ask.

MVUSD DISTRICT ART SHOW 2022-2023

The MVUSD District Art Show displays artworks from a variety of disciplines like sculpture, graphic design, painting, drawing, and ceramics. The awards are split into grade schools for elementary, middle, and high schools within the district.

Earlier this year I encouraged one of my juniors, Navi G. to ask her counselor to move out of my Art I and into Mrs. Bruce's Art II. I knew within the first few weeks of school, by looking at her notes and summative art pieces, she did not need the foundational skills from Art I and needed to be challenged in Art II. This was the catalyst that guided her skills for an award-winning sculpture at this year's student art show for the district.

"I'm most grateful for you pushing me out of my comfort zone and getting me to face bigger challenges and to especially try new things. You encouraged me to take a leap towards an opportunity that would improve me even better but I didn't know it would at the time."

-Navi G., Superintendent's Award Recipient

"Ms. Esparza is always there for her students. She accepts everyone and is always so reassuring. I'm definitely keeping in touch with her after graduation."

LaKisha Beason

Induction Coach, VDLHS

"Margarita is a wonderful example of a teacher who builds relationships with her students to create a community inside her classroom that allows her to set her students up for success."

Rachelle Bruce

Department Chair
Visual Arts, VDLHS
